More Than Just A Day
On 21 September, Africa joined the rest of the world
to mark Peace Day. For Africa, this day was especially significant, as
2010 was declared the Year of Peace and Security in Africa.
Peace Day, therefore, represented an important
milestone for the Year of Peace and Security. 21 September was a natural
bridge in the implementation of this important campaign that allowed
the continent and its international partners to review the achievements
and challenges thus far and to make or revise its plans for the future.
It is important that we all continue to work together to ensure that
this year is marked by more than a series of symbolic activities, and
that it becomes a true catalyst for sustainable peace initiatives on the
continent.
Let us continue our hard work to
achieve all the objectives of the Year of Peace and Security in order to
demonstrate our commitment to this cause and our ability to succeed at
what we set out to do.
About Make Peace Happen
We are striving to Make Peace Happen throughout Africa and we need your support.
2010 is the Year of Peace and Security in Africa.
We need you to play a part in helping to attain a continent free of
conflict. This website provides you with tools and guidance on how you
can help to achieve peace on our continent, and invites you to share
details of your peace-building activities. On 21st September 2010, Peace
Day, all Africans should unite for a day of non-violence, to show that
peace is possible. In so doing, we will give hope for a better future to
millions of our people, and we will make history when all Africans
experience peace simultaneously on one day - Peace Day.
The challenge of achieving peace, security and
stability across the entire African continent is clearly an undertaking
of many years. However the Year of Peace and Security offers an
unprecedented opportunity for African governments, citizens and
institutions, in partnership with the international community, to
celebrate our accomplishments and to review current efforts to peace
building on the continent, with a view to strengthening these and,
where appropriate, launching new initiatives for peace and security. |
